Exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps may lead to a dry shell. This is because such harsh elements disrupt the outer layer of the body and destroy the intercellular medium. Conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, or seborrhea could also lead to dryness as can the use of drugs like diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines.

Other catalysts include smoking, central heating, poor ventilation, dry, cold and windy weather and unprotected exposure to the sun. Loss of oestrogen during menopause also reduces the lipid content of skin, which eliminates its natural protection against dryness. However, this dryness could sometimes be a genetic condition.

Caring for Dry Skin

• Avoid using tap water when cleansing your body. The deposits are too drying on your skin. Instead, use a cleansing oil or cream and remove with a toner

• A dry body needs plenty of thorough but gentle cleansing, regular stimulation with massage and generous quantities of oil and moisture

• Do not wash body using soap and water because it not only removes dirt but also the natural oils protecting the body’s shell.

• Follow a bath or a shower with a mild application of baby oil. Moisturize your body after cleansing to keep it from drying.

• Stay out of overheated rooms

• Use a creamy cleanser or baby oil at night

• Use a facial mask to clear up the surface and remove dull, dry surface cells once a week

• Increase your water intake if your skin is chapped or cracked

• Avoid smoking. Smoking has a harmful effect on the skin. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels that serve the various body parts, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients needed for good health

• Eat a balanced diet that included vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds and nuts. Speaking of nuts, however, watch your intake on some foods as they may be harmful to your health if eaten in large amounts. Eat quality protein from vegetable sources. It is cold and dry when it comes to winter days. This is worsened by the fact that we use heaters which further dries the air. It can be very challenging to keep your skin moist during these cold months. Here are a few tips on taking care of your skin during winter.

  • Keep yourself covered with warm clothing. If possible, wear gloves to keep your hands warm. When you go to bed, wear socks to keep your feet warm and this will also prevent your feet from drying out. For added moisture, after you wash your feet at night, apply foot cream thoroughly on your feet and immediately put on your socks. This will soften your feet during the night as you sleep.
  • Moisturise your body. Apply lotion or body cream to prevent your skin from drying by sealing in the moisture. Your skin will flake and dry very easily if you don’t apply any moisturiser to your body. Be sure to apply a good moisturiser in the morning before you leave home and the evening before you go to bed. Apply moisturiser to your hands every time you wash them. There are a variety of lotions, body creams and body moisturisers that you could use.
  • Wash with a moisturising soap or body wash. Use a body wash or soap that has added lotion or cream so that it doesn’t dry your skin as you wash. An oil based soap is also a good idea.
  • Add a few drops of baby oil to your bath. The oil can seal a bit of moisture into your skin.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day. When it’s cold we tend to drink less water. But you need to keep up your water intake during winter. You need to hydrate your body and your skin from the inside. If you can’t drink water often, at least drink fluids throughout the day; whether it is juice, tea or hot chocolate.
  • Keep the air moist. You could use a humidifier to humidify the air. Or you could place a small bowl of water in front of the heater. This should add some moisture to the air so that it’s not so dry.

Remember, you should be very careful as to how much you expose yourself to the sun. Ensure you have breaks when you are sunbathing.

7. Shave and exfoliate before you tan

To ensure you get an even tan, you should exfoliate, shave, and shower before you tan. You should do this even if you are using professional tan spray. By exfoliating and taking a shower, you remove the dead and dry skin. Dry, dead skin will leave your tan patchy. If you do this after tanning, it will make your skin look messy.

8. Use a water-based moisturizer

It is obvious that certain parts of your skin appear darker than other parts. The self-tanner will saturate dry areas like the elbows and knees. This is why you need to moisturize your body beforehand to get a consistent tan. You should use an aloe Vera based or water based moisturizer. Creams that have oil will be a barrier to your skin and cause the tan to streak all over your body.

Make sure the moisturizer absorbs into your skin before you apply tanning agents.

9. Find the right tanning formula for your skin

Not all products are equal. Unfortunately, the only way you can find out which one works for you is through reviews, research, and trial and error. You should go to the internet and read the reviews of others. You may also seek the services of a professional. There are so many products on the market and you can definitely get one that suits you.

10. Remove all traces of perfume, make-up, or deodorant

Again, all these products act as a barrier to your tan while others might cause irritation. For these reasons ensure you remove them before tanning.

11. Apply your tan in a cool, dry environment

Do not apply your tanning solution immediately when you step out of the bathroom. The steam and heat inside the room will cause your skin to not dry well and that is a big no-no when you want to apply a tan properly.
